But at Slate, the energy is on audio. <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@simonowens\/why-slate-went-all-in-on-podcasts-while-others-focused-on-video-9dfee4995aab\">Consider this meditation<\/a> at Medium.com on Slate&#8217;s podcast prowess. Apparently everyone at the news\/blog was spending so much time pondering the Serial series out loud that the staff just decided, what the hell, let&#8217;s make a podcast about the podcast! Thus it was done, and Slate&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2014\/11\/26\/serial_podcast_spoilers_no_thanksgiving_episode_so_we_discuss_alternative.html\">Serial Spoiler Podcast<\/a> generated a huge &#8216;long tail&#8217; (so to speak) audience\u2014to the tune of hundreds of thousands of downloads.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those downloaders can doubtless relate to this amusing YouTube parody of the phenomenon:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SpH1Q7--w0E\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nota bene: it&#8217;s not that Slate doesn&#8217;t do video, Medium notes, it&#8217;s just that the organization&#8217;s podcasts &#8220;are much more substantial, having developed fervent, almost fanatical followings from listeners, many of whom are willing to line up around the block just to attend a live recording.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Fast Company has its list of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3041669\/most-innovative-companies-2015\/the-worlds-top-10-most-innovative-companies-of-2015-in-media\">Most Innovative Companies for 2015<\/a> out. Two are noted for their podcasts: Public Radio Exchange, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiosurvivor.com\/2014\/07\/09\/podcasts-kick-pants-public-radio-establishment\/\">now the distributor <\/a>for This American Life, and Gimlet Media, which has become &#8220;the podcast revolution\u2019s spokesman,&#8221; as far as FC is concerned; see offerings such as the Internet focused podcast <a href=\"http:\/\/gimletmedia.com\/show\/reply-all\/\">&#8220;Reply All,&#8221;<\/a> which &#8220;will continue setting the bar for the kind of quality, highly produced narrative podcasts that are coming to define the medium.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times and Boston Globe online are all about video these days.
