For me, scoping out interesting radio-themed gifts is a highlight of the season, as there&#8217;s always something new that piques my interest. If you have a radio fan in your life or if you are searching for some items to put on your own wish list, take a look at some of my latest finds. Radio in a Jar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This single-station radio is actually on the top of my list. Although it won&#8217;t arrive in time for the winter holidays, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepublicrad.io\/production-preorder\/preorder-the-public-radio\" target=\"_blank\">pre-order<\/a> for delivery in May, 2015. Dubbed the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepublicrad.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">Public Radio<\/a>,&#8221; the single station FM radio, had a very successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/358468212\/the-public-radio-the-single-station-fm-radio\" target=\"_blank\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a> this fall, bringing in more than $88,000 in order to fund production of these radios built into small Mason Jars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Huffy Radio Bike + Other Bike Radios<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What could be cooler than a bicycle with a built-in radio? The Huffy Radio Bike <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffybikes.com\/About\/History.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">first appeared in 1955<\/a>, and included a built-in radio. Read more about the bike <a href=\"http:\/\/dialyourride.wordpress.com\/page-3-1955-huffy-radiobike\/\" target=\"_blank\">here on Dial a Ride<\/a>. It turns out that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevenjohnson.com\/bicycleradios\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">earlier bicycle radios<\/a> appeared in the 1930s and a more recent detachable bicycle radio was marketed in the 1990s. Radio Making Kit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the year that I&#8217;m going to build my own radio and this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.target.com\/p\/wonderology-science-kit-snap-plug-play-radio\/-\/A-15330811\" target=\"_blank\">Wonderology Snap Plug and Play radio kit<\/a> seems like the perfect, simple first-time radio-making project. The pieces snap together and according to the product description, it&#8217;s appropriate for ages 5 and up. Wooden Phone Dock that Looks Like a Radio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are a whole range of products out there that look retro, but are actually brand new and are designed to connect with modern devices like iPhones. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/B00GIMX9L6\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00GIMX9L6&amp;linkCode=am2&amp;tag=lasarslettero-20&amp;linkId=6TSSZD2LTRNTKA3D\">Areaware Decorative Radio Dock<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=lasarslettero-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00GIMX9L6\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> looks like a funky wooden radio, but it&#8217;s actually a dock for one&#8217;s iPhone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Circa 1928 Speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I fell in love with the look of these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restorationhardware.com\/catalog\/category\/products.jsp?link=VintageAudio&amp;categoryId=cat3910035\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;vintage&#8221; speakers<\/a> that I spotted in the Restoration Hardware catalog (take a look at their website for more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restorationhardware.com\/catalog\/category\/collections.jsp?categoryId=cat5100003&amp;sale=false\" target=\"_blank\">retro audio pieces<\/a> plus numerous other vintage-inspired items, including some that are seemingly pulled from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.restorationhardware.com\/catalog\/product\/product.jsp?productId=prod2460908&amp;categoryId=search\" target=\"_blank\">steam punker&#8217;s dreams<\/a>). According to the catalog copy, &#8220;Inspired by a speaker from 1928, the dawn of radio&#8217;s golden age,&#8221; the cast-metal speakers can be connected via wireless to your phone or mp3 player. New Radio Books on Walter Benjamin and Top 40<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you are looking to pick up some scholarly radio tomes, there are two new books that I&#8217;m eager to read. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/1781685754\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1781685754&amp;linkCode=am2&amp;tag=lasarslettero-20&amp;linkId=PJXRMBHHSTVQQBEU\">Radio Benjamin<\/a> compiles radio transcripts from scholar Walter Benjamin, who hosted a radio show in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Additionally, Eric Weisbard&#8217;s new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/0226896188\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0226896188&amp;linkCode=am2&amp;tag=lasarslettero-20&amp;linkId=W565Q45TN5G4PDNN\">Top 40 Democracy: The Rival Mainstreams of American Music<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=lasarslettero-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0226896188\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>, is worth checking out for its analysis of popular radio genres and their intersections with mainstream music in America. Antique Radios Curated by the New York Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In another example of the celebration of all things vintage, the New York Times Store has an entire section devoted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytstore.com\/Antique-Radios\" target=\"_blank\">antique radios<\/a>. For 2014, the bizarre appliance, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/B00FGDWJJQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00FGDWJJQ&amp;linkCode=am2&amp;tag=lasarslettero-20&amp;linkId=7LGQLYACGOCEN4C2\">JNH Lifestyles Infrared Space Heater, Radio and Media Player<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=lasarslettero-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00FGDWJJQ\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>combines a space heater with a functioning radio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Countdown to Christmas Radio<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Hallmark decoration from 2013, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/offer-listing\/B00DP379QM\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00DP379QM&amp;linkCode=am2&amp;tag=lasarslettero-20&amp;linkId=PKBHI3QVD6T4JL2R\">North Pole Countdown Radio Tabletop Decoration<\/a>, looks like a vintage radio, but when you turn the dial you can hear recorded messages that count down to Christmas. It can also be connected to an mp3 player.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11. 2015 Tower Site Calendar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last, but not least, is Scott Fybush&#8217;s annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fybush.com\/product-category\/calendars\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tower Site Calendar<\/a>. The 2015 edition features color photographs of radio towers from all over the United States.
