{"id":28265,"date":"2014-10-13T05:31:17","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T12:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiosurvivor.com\/?p=28265"},"modified":"2014-10-12T17:48:12","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T00:48:12","slug":"internet-dj-soundclouds-world-channel-works","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiosurvivor.com\/2014\/10\/internet-dj-soundclouds-world-channel-works\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet DJ: why SoundCloud&#8217;s world music channel works"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several weeks ago I gave a rather bad grade to SoundCloud&#8217;s &#8220;explore&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiosurvivor.com\/2014\/09\/18\/get-soundcloud-classical-channel-doesnt-suck\/\">classical channel<\/a>, but I&#8217;ve been checking out other channels, and the service&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/explore\/world\">&#8220;world&#8221; stream<\/a> is much better. A lot of really marvelous Japanese, South Korean, Chinese, Arabic, and Indian content there.<\/p>\n<p>Among the best tracks I&#8217;ve heard: <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/l2share_3\/akmu-akdong-musician-time-and-fallen-leaves\">Time and Fallen Leaves<\/a>. A fine piece from the South Korean K-pop duo group <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akdong_Musician\">Akdong Musician<\/a>. These kids are originally from Mongolia, but made their way back to South Korea to get into the music biz. Seems like it&#8217;s working so far. Light guitar playing accompanying a beautiful soprano vocal track.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/171363459&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;visual=true\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nMeanwhile SoundCloud user <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/h-salah\">H. Salah<\/a> has an outstanding stream of classic Egyptian vocals; I would definitely check out the Bollywood tracks being offered by <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/old-punjabi-gold\">Old Punjabi Gold<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/africagroove\">Africa Groove<\/a> has a lovely <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiwa_Savage\">Tiwa Savage<\/a> hit, My Darlin.<\/p>\n<p>Why does SoundCloud&#8217;s &#8220;world&#8221; channel work so much better than its classical channel? I think that the amorphousness of the concept of World Music lends to its success in this instance. World Music was always a sort of neo-Colonial idea, after all. Think about it: when was the last time you saw Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus on a World Music playlist? Never, yet they&#8217;re part of &#8220;the world,&#8221; right? In the end, &#8220;World Music&#8221; is generally the First World looking at and listening to the Third. But the sheer messy globalness of the genre makes it much easier to curate via categories and tags.<\/p>\n<p>SoundCloud is just vacuuming up users and listeners, it should be noted. <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2014\/10\/11\/soundcloud-posted-a-29m-loss-in-2013-on-revenues-of-14m\/\">Tech Crunch says<\/a> that its heading for no less than 200 million listeners a month. And its revenues are also jumping, Euro-wise: from 8 million in 2013 to 14 million in 2014.
