{"id":26246,"date":"2014-04-01T08:40:02","date_gmt":"2014-04-01T15:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.radiosurvivor.com\/?p=26246"},"modified":"2014-04-01T09:42:20","modified_gmt":"2014-04-01T16:42:20","slug":"community-fm-city-thousand-trades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.radiosurvivor.com\/2014\/04\/community-fm-city-thousand-trades\/","title":{"rendered":"East and West Midlands, UK: community radio signals available"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Kingdom&#8217;s broadcast regulator, Ofcom, just <a href=\"http:\/\/licensing.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/radio\/community\/thirdround\/Invitation_West_and_East_Midlands.pdf\">put out an invitation<\/a> to apply for community radio licenses in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Midlands_(region)\">West<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Midlands\">East Midlands<\/a>. These are official regions situated (as you might guess) right in the middle of England.<\/p>\n<p>What caught my eye, however, is this codicil in the announcement;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Applicants should note that there are currently no suitable FM frequencies available for community radio services in the following unitary authority, metropolitan borough, and non-metropolitan borough areas. Applications for services wishing to broadcast on FM within these areas will therefore not be accepted:<br \/>\n\u2022 City of Birmingham;<br \/>\n\u2022 Solihull;<br \/>\n\u2022 City of Coventry;<br \/>\n\u2022 Derby;<br \/>\n\u2022 Nottinghamshire (with the exception of Newark on Trent);<br \/>\n\u2022 Nottingham;<br \/>\n\u2022 Lincoln;<br \/>\n\u2022 Leicestershire; and<br \/>\n\u2022 Leicester.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No suitable community FM frequencies for the City of Birmingham, &#8220;City of a Thousand Trades&#8221; with over a million residents? Not to mention Leicester, Nottingham, Coventry??? I see there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.switchradio.co.uk\/aboutus.asp\">Switch Radio 107.5<\/a>, a community oriented signal for the Castle Vale area of Birmingham. I am hoping the above means &#8216;new suitable FM&#8217; frequencies.
